My kid struggled with the grass, which makes her itchy. Now I know – Florida hikes require non-drowsy antihistamine loading ahead of time! Benadryl on the trail doesn’t lead to a good attitude.
P.S. Old school antihistamines are a prime first aid kit requirement, particularly when hiking with kids. A bit of itching isn't a big deal, but on the off chance you discover you have an anaphalatic reaction to something several miles from nowhere, a pocket full of antihistamines are helpful (not actual medical advice; don't sue me).
At the northern end of the island, the Osprey and Pelican Cove trails meet up at a smelly beach. There were two people out in the water fishing; I bet they made a great haul. Aside from the stink, which was it's own living, breathing creature, there was some interesting wildlife. Not all of it was currently living. My daughter made fun of me for photographing a bunch of dead things (a fish, a well-preserved shrimp, a whelk...). I'll spare you the graveyard.
A couple of sweaty, buggy, greasy miles later and we made it back to the trail head. The highlight of our return trip was seeing a gopher tortoise.
