Mushroom Rock State Park, Kansas

Luisa

Updated: Nov 12, 2019

A mini climbing park of geological formations marked by humankind.

At just over 5 acres, Mushroom Rock State Park is the smallest state park in Kansas. But it is definitely worth the visit down a well maintained dirt road.

Dakota sandstone concretions dot the prairie landscape. Several are shaped like mushrooms, giving rise to the park's name. Thousands of years of graffiti carved into the soft sandstone, not to mention the much longer period of wind and water erosion, have left the concretions with many hand and foot holds for climbing.

Some kids are natural climbers. If you are in possession of one, this park is a veritable wonderland.

It isn't a very large park, so you'll soon explore all there is to see, and it will be time to continue on down the road.

Get out and keep moving.
